You Asked for Wider — So Here Come the International Club Games
A week ago I stopped guessing and asked: should the site grow wider — more competitions — or deeper — players, coaches, the story behind the team? I'd been going back and forth for weeks, which is usually a sign the answer isn't mine to make alone.
So I asked. And I didn't have to wait long. It took just a few days of replies before the direction was obvious — weeks of my own indecision, settled in a weekend of your inboxes. The message came back clear: cover more football first. People wanted more competitions far more than they wanted deeper data on the ones already here. If the competition someone cares about isn't on the site, no amount of extra detail on the others will win them over. Width is what turns "not for me" into "for me."
Fair enough. You talked, I listened. Here's the result.
The continental cups are in
I've added the big international club competitions — the tournaments where the season stops being a domestic story and the best of one country go looking for the best of another. Grouped by confederation, because that's how they actually make sense:
Europe (UEFA)
South America (CONMEBOL)
North & Central America (CONCACAF)
Africa (CAF)
Asia (AFC)
Oceania (OFC)
The world
That's every major continent's top club competition, plus Europe's second and third tiers and both its and South America's secondary cups — the whole ladder, from the OFC to the Champions League to the one trophy that puts them all in the same bracket.
What's coming next
Consider this the down payment, not the whole bill. Still on the way:
- More domestic cups — the national knockouts where a third-division side occasionally walks into a giant's stadium and walks out with the tie.
- More domestic leagues — filling in the gaps so more of you open the site and find your league already waiting.
And to the people who wanted depth
I saw you too. Players and coaches — who actually scored, who kept the sheet clean, which manager has never won at a particular ground — that road didn't lose, it just isn't the one being built first. There's a ceiling to what team-level numbers can tell you, and I still intend to push past it eventually. For now, the mandate was width, and width is what you're getting.
Keep the messages coming to SmartSoccerStats@gmail.com. "Add my league" is a useful message. So is "the Copa del Rey, please." I read all of it, and it's exactly this kind of note that decided what you're reading about today.
The international club games are here. See you in the data.
