New Filter: Standings For Any Period

announcementfilters

I keep catching myself wondering how a league table looked at different points in a season: who was top at the halfway mark, who was flying in the run-in, who quietly fell apart after Christmas. So the league standings page on Smart Soccer Stats now lets you build the table for any period within a season.

League first, then the seasons I actually have

Start by choosing a league at the top. The season dropdown then fills in with only the seasons I actually hold data for in that league — no guessing, no empty tables for years that aren't there.

Each season knows its own real start and end dates (taken from the first and last games actually played), so everything below is bounded to reality — including the COVID-disrupted 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, which ran on very unusual calendars.

Slice it to a period

Instead of a single "as of" date, there are now two date pickers — period start and period end. They default to the full season, and you can drag either end inwards to look at just a slice:

  • Where did things stand at the halfway point?
  • Who had the best run-in over the final two months?
  • What did the table look like between two specific dates?

The start can't go before the season began and the end can't go past the season's last game, so you always stay inside real, played football.

An honest confession

I'll be straight with you: when I first built the "as of a date" version I was convinced it was my own clever idea — until I went looking and found the same thing in several other places. The period version scratches the same itch, just with both ends in your hands.

Turns out a good idea is rarely a lonely one.

Go slice something

As always, if there's a feature you'd love to see next, tell me. Enjoy!
